I let Skate do the talking for me.  I got a little behind with all the work that went into prepping for the Baltimore Comic-Con, so I want to get a little bit further ahead into Chapter 3 before I launch it.  So, next week, I give some love to comics I like and I think you guys might like as well.

Well, at least he’s trying.  Unfortunately, Felix can’t write.  “Over” is blocking him.  Now what?

There was an interesting article at webcomics.com a few weeks ago where Brad Guigar made the bold statement that writer’s block is a complete myth.  His argument is that it’s impossible to be blocked from ideas, ideas are cheap and flow freely all the time.  What we call writer’s block isn’t a lack of ideas, but a lack of the confidence to execute on any of the ideas you have.  Definitely give it a read and see where you stand.

I personally think Brad might be right.  And I think that explains what’s going on in Felix’s head.  He’s got the story for “Pendragon” #12 in him.  He’s been wanting to tell it his whole life.  What he doesn’t have is confidence.  And when you’re rejected by someone you love, confidence is one the hardest things to get back.

This wraps up Chapter Two!  We’re really moving now, boys and girls!

What would you do to get back at Felix if you were the boys?

In a lot of way, this page nails one of the big themes of Over.  Yes, this is a story about a break up.  But even more so, it’s a story about the lengths creative people go to deal with pain.  More often than not, it’s through art.  And any of you who are artistic, whether it’s writing, music, drawing, painting, knitting- whatever you do, it helps.

But the bigger idea here (and the one that’s the original concept that hasn’t been done to death I think) is that the cathartic piece of work you do…that love song you write, poem you bleed out, or in Felix’s case, graphic novel you produce- that’s for you, an audience of one.  Just because it helped you, doesn’t mean it’s good or should be shared with the world.

The mistake Felix made (and hopefully the one I’m avoiding) was not keeping an audience in mind.

I had some fun drawing this page, because there was a lot I did image wise that wasn’t in the script.  As I was drawing little Ike in Panel 1, I thought it would be much more absurd if he was reaching out a Clint’s gun.  And then it made sense to have his pacifier pop out again in Panel 4 thanks to the door slamming.  Just little touches.

Truth be told, the “I thought he’d mellow out” line was taken from real life.  While I was not in attendance at this particular bachelor party (much to my dismay) I heard a story of a  stripper’s boyfriend showing up and causing a bit of a ruckus outside of the party.  After dealing with him and sending him off, the stripper borrowed a cigarette from one of my friends and said, “I thought he’d mellow out after I gave him a kid.”  My friend went back inside and suddenly wasn’t interested in seeing her naked anymore.  Sad city.

Alright, maybe it’s just me.  But the image of a bad ass pimp with an infant in a baby bjorn…That’s just funny.  I made Clint a total hardcore badass, but I could see Will Ferrell pulling this scene off in a movie.

Alright folks, this next three pages represent absolute rock bottom for Felix.  When you’re calling numbers in the adult services section of the paper…yeah, you’ve hit a low point.

In the first draft of this scene, Felix answered the door and it was a transexual escort…not what he ordered!  However, that’s been done to death in comedies.  One of the things I’ve tried to do in this script is eliminate the most obvious cliches where I can, so the scene needed to be revised.

After reworking this scene, I’m pretty sure I’ve come up with something you ain’t never seen before.

Okay, not to worry.  This is the last of the rubber band gags.  In the script, I described Felix as wearing “The World’s Largest Rubber Band.”  That sucker would hurt.

Not exactly top notch strip club etiquette from Felix.

No offense to the mother’s out there.  Overcomic.com is pro-mom, pro-baby, etc.  But if you got a kid at home…you don’t need to be dancing on the pole.

Continuing to have fun with the Self-Help Guru’s “Rubber Band Trick” from Page 47.  Also trying to get across that seeming phenomenon when you are in the dumps that it seems like everyone else has it better off.  What could be worse after being dumped than suffering a perfectly happy couple gearing up for a sex-filled weekend?
